LEARNING BY DOING: THE BENEFITS OF ADOPTING AN ONLINE NEGOTIATION SUPPORT SYSTEM INTO AN ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES COURSE

The paper reports on the benefits of imbedding an online negotiation support system (NSS) into experiential learning framework English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course. Proponents projects in second/foreign language classroom emphasize by doing. To test claim, performances students two advanced level EAP courses at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, were compared. One course was developed with principles content-based (CBI) instruction, input primarily from academic texts; other also used instruction but enhanced project which adopted. Participation provided a novel experience second learners Carleton, counterparts universities three additional countries (Austria, Poland, and Taiwan) participating. A statistical analysis student grades showed that obtained significantly higher final assignment comparison to “traditional” CBI course.The demonstrates this teaching training enhances promoting learner autonomy, critical thinking, development. Relevant aspects led outcomes, supporting claim doing acquisition. proposes new model, applicable ESP/EAP i.e., sustained-content model can be applied any emphasizes through direct experience. depicts importance sequencing content tasks build each allowing accumulate knowledge prepare them engage meaningful, authentic communication. It illustrates using reflection as effective tool helps develop thinking analysis, skills necessary success.
